Best Free Online Flash Games

Below is a list of online games that I recommend as some of the best of the best. Each game is separated by genre and this list will be periodically updated. All of the links currently lead to Newgrounds (other than a few exceptions) but each of these games can be found on Armor Games and Kongregate as well. Let's get started shall we?

Shooter

Enigmata Series
The Enigmata Series is a vertical scrolling space shooter that involves heavy RPG elements and fast-paced combat. There are literally tons of upgrades and new ships to obtain that will keep you busy for about a week or more. There's also a healthy load of flashy effects and plenty of massive boss battles to rip through as well. This is truly a Skinner Box at work but it's still a load of fun regardless.

Drakojan Skies Series
The Drakojan Skies Series takes place in a fictional world that involves a small squadron attempting to protect a race of Drakojans. The graphics, gameplay, and story are some of the most interesting and involving of any side-scrolling shooter I've ever seen on the web. Why did this one fly under everyone's radar?

Drakojan Skies Aco (Full)

RaidenX
This vertical shooter is a huge nod to the classic arcade schmups from back in the day. It's challenging but it's possible to beat it in one sitting. The biggest advantage this schmup has is its simplistic gameplay. It's extremely easy to pick up and doesn't require any planning or advanced tactics or skills (which is both a blessing and a curse).

RaidenX
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/246725

Bullet Heaven
This is what's known as a "bullet hell" type of shooter (hence the clever title of the game). Tons of enemy shots will fill the screen to the brim and require precise navigation. The stages and challenges in this game are fun to play through and it's great that you can unlock other characters with different abilities. Just be warned that the difficulty ramps up tremendously toward the end.

Bullet Heaven

RPG Shooter: Starwish
This game easily makes the list as the dialogue, characters, story, and music are some of the best if not THE best of any Flash game I've ever played. The gameplay is no slouch either and there are plenty of delicious upgrades and weapons to load out your ship with. To top it off, there are several meaningful (and amazing) endings that you can earn. I will admit that the visuals of the gameplay could be improved but nobodies perfect. There is a chance for a sequel and I'm looking forward to it.

RPG

Sonny Series
Regardless of the fact that I said these top four games aren't rated, this series would definitely take the top RPG spot. You play as an intelligent zombie with a serious case of amnesia (a zombie who doesn't eat brains I might add) and you get involved in something rather huge. I won't spoil anything here but let's just say there is quite the mystery to unfold. It's probably the most polished and detailed turn-based RPG on the web. Gameplay feels rather similar to classic Final Fantasy games while the upgrading uses a more modern talent tree. To top it all off, there's great voice acting for every scene as well.

Sonny 2
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/492477

Sinjid Series
Well it's no surprise that the guy who made Sonny would have another turn based RPG on the side that also happens to be top notch. This is yet another Final Fantasy-esque game except the story involves Ninjas instead of Zombies. The only reason this series dosen't top Sonny is that the story isn't all that great and the game is a bit too easy. Regardless, it's still one of the best free flash RPGs on the web and you should definitely give it a shot.

Sinjid: Shadow of the Warrior
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/209736

Arcuz
This is heavily reminiscent of Diablo and Zelda. While the story is nothing spectacular (as there isn't much story there to begin with) it's still a fun grind with some interesting quests and the game itself will waste your free time for a week or so which is nice if you enjoy longer games. There's an interesting craft system and plenty of skills and spells to play around with.

Arcuz (Full Version)
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/546991

Hack Slash Crawl
This game has loads of potential and it's already a barrel of fun the way it is. There's zero story, zero dialogue, zero towns, and zero shops. It's just dungeon crawling as you hack and slash your way through tons of different enemies in randomized maps as you attempt to go as deep as possible. The dozens of race/class combinations are a blast to experiment with and the gameplay is a huge nod to Diablo. Let's just hope there's a sequel with more content.

Castaway Series
If you liked Arcuz then you'll enjoy this one as well. Basically everything I said about Arcuz could be repeated here.

Adventure

Endeavor
This game is all about exploration. There's an entire other world to see and you'll have to gain more power if you ever want to be capable of returning home. Power-ups are significant and expand what other areas you can explore. Also the story gets brownie points for reminding me of Shadow of the Colossus.

Endeavor

William and Sly
It's interesting just how accessible this game is (your parents might even get into this). You play the role of the faithful companion and you're quite the awesome Fox I must say. You go on quite the journey and quest through different perils to help your owner.

William and Sly
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/503833

Level Up!
Everything you do levels up some kind of stat. Everything from running and jumping to talking and even taking damage. The story is that a hero crashes into your yard and fence but he seems to have a bad case of amnesia. You've got to explore to find clues and solve the mystery surrounding the incident. The twist here is that every night there is a re-occurring nightmare that sets you back to zero if you lose to it. Definitely check out this RPG/Platformer/Sandbox hybrid.

Level Up!

Coma
I can't spoil anything but this is an astoundingly deep game. You'll have to travel through Pete's subconscious and solve the mysteries of the game and its meaning. The aesthetics are breathtaking and the entire game will leave you with a lot to think about.

Coma
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/541124

Skinny
Another brilliant game made by the same person who made Coma. It's a rather haunting experience as you play the role of a robot that's ordered to plug humans back into a fake alternate reality (Matrix-esque). There's actually a lot more to it and the game has a deeper meaning beyond my description of the basic gameplay but I'll leave the rest to your own thoughts as you play for yourself.

Skinny

Puzzle

Knightfall Series
Great aesthetics, piles of polish, a good sense of humor, and a very original puzzle concept. You're a Knight with a Gurren Lagann-esque drill and you can rotate the entire dungeon screen while drilling out different colored blocks beneath you. The key is to traverse each dungeon by setting up blocks in a way that won't force you to run out of AP. Try it out and get your drill on.

Portal: The Flash Version
This is literally what it sounds like and it's actually well made and challenging. If you haven't heard of Portal by now then I'm not entirely sure you're a human being living on Earth.

Portal: The Flash Version
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/404612

Enough Plumbers
This is a puzzle platformers that delves more on the side of puzzle than platform (90/10 if I had to split it percentage-wise respectively). Almost every stage hits that sweetspot of being more about the puzzle aspect and less about perfectly timed jumps. There are a couple of stages that are exceptions to this but I'm not complaining. Plus you get the added bonus of fake nostalgia from a Mario clone that isn't actually a clone at all as it's a puzzle game ABOUT making clones to solve the puzzles. It's as awesome as it is clever.

Enough Plumbers
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/534961

Bloody Fun Day
You're the Grim Reaper and it's time to slash apart cute animals! Each type of animal releases a soul that powers up different gauges to unleash different powers. Here's the catch: the game takes place on a hex grid and after slashing through one enemy, you kill ALL of the same type in the surrounding area. They leave an egg behind to replace themselves but slashing through eggs is hazardous to your own health. You also need Red Souls to extend your life (1 Red Soul = 1 extra turn) and they're in low supply.

Bloody Fun Day
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/486608

Achievement Unlocked Series
Everything you do unlocks an achievement. It's the ultimate game about metagaming. The trick is solving how to unlock certain achievements which there in lies the puzzle.

Tower Defense

Cursed Treasure: Don't Touch my Gems
This is my personal favorite Tower Defense (TD) game. When I first started the game I originally thought there was zero strategy involved as the first stage forces you to place particular towers in the same colored areas. I was proven wrong very quickly. The RPG elements definitely make the game here as the abilities you unlock are actually both useful and interesting. The towers themselves are also a nice touch as there are only three different towers with their own unique traits you unlock between stages. Each tower-type has a talent tree and when you buy a skill/bonus/whatever you also get a static bonus to that type of tower. That means you get to have your cake and eat it too.

Cursed Treasure: Level Pack
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/569187

Gemcraft Series
This is probably the most popular TD game (series) on the web. This is one of the most complex and involving TD games in the gameplay department. There are several gem types with their own attributes that can be combined with one another in different ways and placed as towers or traps which also have different strengths and weaknesses depending on the stage and enemies you're facing at any given moment. The double edged sword here is the time investment. You'll have to playthrough levels dozens upon dozens of times with added handicaps to hope to raise your experience just a little further each time or else you'll never make it to the end. For those that want a game that will last them a month or more then this is for you. For those just wanting a mild distraction then at least test it out but it's probably not your bag.

Bloons TD Series
If you're looking for a more lively and comical TD game then look no further. This series offers monkeys throwing bladed boomerangs (or even lightsabers) at "bloons" (similar to "balloons") and even using superhero monkeys with laser beam vision! It's a fast-paced TD game (series) that will suck you in with its adorableness and keep you coming back for more after the harder difficulties have mocked you by letting you get to the final stages before burying you beneath your hopes and dreams of getting that gold medal.

Pokemon TD
I'll admit, this game isn't even finished yet and it still lacks that extra bit of polish it needs and yet it has still managed to make it to the top four. Let me explain my reasoning. First of all, I should make it clear that it's exactly what it sounds like. You can catch, level up, and evolve Pokemon that you fight in different stages. Each tower is one of your Pokemon and the different attacks they have are actually based on their real moves from the games. Just like in the games, they can only have four moves at a time and you can only have a party of six total. The creator is consistently adding updates every week by fixing bugs, adding levels, and so much more. There's even an interesting albeit cheezy storyline here involving famous characters from the game and show. It's as enjoyable as you already think it is and it's already proven to win over fans that normally hate TD games so that's saying a lot already.

Pokemon Tower Defense
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/566150

Bubble Tanks TD
This one made it to the list thanks to the polish, variety of play, and simply the sheer amount of stages. As with every TD game you'll have to use different types of turrets and strategically place them. There is one big change to the core gameplay here though. You can actually combine turrets into new types of turrets and eventually combine entire groups of turrets into massively epic weapons. Each stage has its own restriction or strange layout to make things more difficult.

Strategy

Rebuild
I wrote a review on this in the past and it's no surprise that it deserves to be in a top list. It's like I said before, it's one of those concepts you imagine someone would have already done by now and yet this was the first zombie turn based strategy/SIM and still one of the best turn based strategy flash games on the web. Easy to learn and difficult to master with the only drawback being that there weren't enough modes to play even after it drains you of tons of precious time already after the addiction settles in (it doesn't take long).

Rebuild

Necronator
Step 1) Summon Undead. Step 2) Destroy Villages. Step 3)???? Step 4) Profit! This is a real time strategy game where you gain skills, spells, and more powerful undead by wreaking havoc on every village. You play the role of a Necromancer (if that wasn't obvious enough already) that wants to control the land but you'll have to face armies and heroes to reach your goal.

Necronator

Steambirds
Turn based strategy meets flight simulator meets aerial combat meets puzzle game meets interesting concept. All actions including attacks or flight patterns are planned out during your turn but instead of "taking turns" like in most games, all actions occur simultaneously. It's brilliant and you should try it out ASAP.

Shellcore Command Series
A real time strategy game that mixes small elements of tower defense with tractor beams and living spacecraft. The world that's created here is intriguing as there are dangerous zones and mysterious entities with untold purpose. By the end of it all, you're really questioning what's going on or who the real villain is. You're a living ship that starts off as a "newborn" needing to be escorted to safety through a battlefield. As you progress, you'll be adding items and pieces of debris to your ship to not only create your own floating and sentient weapon of mass destruction but to also save your fellow people that originally rescued you.

All of the appeal of Pokemon with six player teams as you attempt to traverse the world. It's just like Pokemon only completely different. No joke.

Action

Wulfgar
I feel like this is one of those sleeper titles that got overlooked for some reason. You play a truly badass Viking in this hack and slash game. You're forced to think on your feet and use quick reflexes to take out even the most basic of enemies or you're dead. Boss battles are epic and require you to solve clues to vanquish them. Best of all? The music is by Evil-Dog.

Wulfgar

Fancy Pants Series
There's a reason this game's third iteration is on the PSN and XLA. The closest thing I can compare this to is the old Sonic games on the Sega Genesis. It's lovable and made of speed. This is definitely one platformer you should check out.

Canabalt

The Breach
If you ever wanted a dark and trippy space marine game that's reminiscent of Dead Space and Resistance then here you go. Be prepared for horrific events to unfold, freaky space aliens, lots of fast-paced gunplay, and terrifying imagery. Hooray!

The Breach
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/542858

Larry and the Gnomes
It's an oldschool hack and slash arcade brawler with a ridiculous amount of weapons to slay countless gnomes with. The Bosses are challenging, the stages are interesting, and there's a fun little story packed in there.

Larry and the Gnomes

Puzzle Platformer

Time Fcuk
A mind fuck of a game that will make you question what's really going on and possibly even weird you out. The entire game itself is immersive, even down to the main menu. You play the role of a silent protagonist trapped in an alternate dimension inside a box thanks to your future self demanding you go inside as it's what's best for the both of you. Your future and possibly past selves constantly contact you with disturbing messages that get progressively horrifying as you traverse through the different levels.

Time Fcuk

Exit Path
You're a stick figure racing toward freedom. You learn very quickly that the promise of freedom is a lie. You'll still stop at nothing to gain survival as you race through thousands of traps in the hopes to reach the city limits. The game also supports a multiplayer mode outside of the story mode. Exit Path is crazy fast-paced and the goal is simple: acquire freedom.

Exit Path
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/538792

Tower of Heaven
This is another game I got the chance to review before. This game is a huge nod to the old Gameboy days. Your character is attempting to scale the Tower of Heaven against a God's wishes. Because of this, this God imposes a different Law for each floor of the Tower. These Laws restrict what you're allowed to do (such as moving in a certain direction). To make matters worse: All of these Laws stack!

Tower of Heaven
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/544332

Depict1
This one's a short one but an interesting game about discerning what you're able to trust. You have to figure out the information that is trustworthy to proceed or be trapped like an animal in a cage forever.

Depict1
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/546057

Super Puzzle Platformer
It's an "actual" puzzle platformer. As in, you're in a puzzle game that you have to platform in to survive. You're armed with a laser as blocks fall from the sky. Shooting blocks of a certain color destroys all surrounding blocks of the same color. Don't carelessly shoot around or you'll destroy the blocks beneath your feet and fall to the spikes below but don't shoot sparingly either or else you'll get yourself trapped among walls of blocks filling the screen.

Super Puzzle Platformer

Artistic

The Majesty of Colors
You dream. You dream of being a creature beyond your understanding who has fallen in love with the majesty of colors. You come into contact with another race (humans) and must make a decision on how you will interact with them. There are five different endings based on what choices you make. Choose wisely.

The Majesty of Colors
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/474519

Loved
This is a game about confrontation and decisions but ultimately it's a game about being loved. You decide if you'll listen or not but in the end, it can explain why we're treated the way we are and why we want to treat others a particular way.

Loved

Alphaland
You stumble upon a world inside of a game that is beyond your imagining. You aren't sure what is actually going on at first but as you explore this world you've found, you might find something you didn't expect.

Alphaland
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/569046

Tri-Achnid
Rather than play a humanoid, you take on the role of an endangered species of exopod (a three-legged spider-esque creature). You take on the role of a father who has just lost his wife to a massive beast and must protect his children while escaping a dangerous land. The game allows you to stick to walls, pick up objects, spin web, and simply do things no other game really lets you experiment with. The controls are rather complicated to get used to but extremely rewarding in the end. The game also uses the song The Longest Night by Tin Hat Trio to its greatest effect and sets up the saddest atmosphere I've seen in a game.

Tri-Achnid
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/347467

The Company of Myself
You won't realize what makes this game so amazing in the earlier levels but as you progress through to the end you'll see exactly why everyone loves this game so much. It's incredibly deep and walks you through the mind of a man who's only a fragment of what he once was. It's also a challenging puzzle platformer that forces you to use memories of yourself to complete different tasks by yourself.

The Company of Myself
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/518729

Launch

Toss the Turtle
If I had to pick just one Launch game, it would be this. Toss the Turtle has to be not only the best looking Launch game but the most in-depth one as well. There are so many items and upgrades that there needed to be multiple screens for it. My favorite aspect by far is the fact that you're never forced to just sit and watch after you launch the turtle to his eminent death. You're given a sling shot (which can be upgraded into firearms) to aim and fire at him as you attempt to juggle him and extend his air time.

Toss the Turtle

Learn to Fly Series
I actually didn't play the first so I can only speak for the second but this is an awesome launch game. You're a Penguin attempting to learn to fly by using hang gliders, rockets, or whatever you can afford. The better you do during each flight scores you more money to work with. The physics are solid, the upgrades are plentiful, and the comedy will keep you smiling.

Burrito Bison
Play the role of a luchador that launches out of the ring with the goal of escaping Candy Land. Be prepared to squash a lot of gummy bears on the way out.

Burrito Bison
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/562620

Berzerk Ball
The expansion to the original: Homerun in Berzerk Land. You get to smash the crap out of a stereotypical nerd into Vikings, Mecha, Bees, and other oddities. It's not offensive to nerds as I'm pretty sure there isn't anyone that acts like this character (he's a complete douche bag which makes you want to knock him out of the park that much more). The style, fast-paced action, and upgrades make this one a fun game to keep coming back to.

Berkzerk Ball

Point and Click

Gretel and Hansel Series
You play the role of Gretel in the dark, gory, and stylish reimagining of the story Hansel and Gretel. It's a point and click adventure game with puzzle elements including item combinations and solving how to progress through a mystical realm of faeries, ghosts, demonic wolves, treefolk, witches, and more.

Morningstar
Your spaceship has crash landed on a deserted planet. You'll need to find parts to repair the ship as you solve the mystery of what's actually going on and why your ship crash landed in the first place. The puzzles are actually pretty intense in this one and luckily you can radio your Captain for advice at any point to help you along the way. This game also has probably the most detailed and beautiful opening and ending cutscenes of any Flash game but that's merely icing on the already delicious cake.

Morningstar
http://www.newgrounds.com/portal/view/495972

The Outsider
This was made for the Newgrounds Game Jam 5 contest which forces the creator to make a game in only three days. They took H.P. Lovecraft's short story the Outsider and turned it into a point and click adventure game. The art direction blends the atmosphere perfectly with Lovecraft's story which really sets this one apart from other games.

The Outsider

Hanamushi: Pock's Friend
This is actually on a Japanese site and is roughly translated but you'll still get the full experience of the game and the story it has to tell. It's a tale of friendship in a very odd little world with a uniquely twisted and yet friendly art style.

Hanamushi: Pock's Friend
http://hanamushi.jp/flash/poc01_e.htm

Bars of Black and White
This is a point and click adventure in the vein of other "escape the room" style games but with a twist. It's less about escaping the room and more about escaping how you perceive reality. Give it a try.
